How to make giving your dog medication easier for both of you

How to Make Giving Your Dog Medication Easier (and Less Stressful)

Work up to the pill—don’t start with it.
Begin by giving your pup a regular treat. Then offer a treat wrapped in pill wrap without medication. Finally, give them the pill wrapped in the pill wrap. This builds trust and keeps them from getting suspicious too soon.
Make it an event.
Ask for a simple behavior first—like a sit. This creates anticipation and gets their brain engaged, which makes the process smoother and more positive overall.
Have fun with it.
Even if you already know how to “pill your dog,” why not make it enjoyable? When your pup thinks medication time is just an extra-special snack break, everyone feels less stressed.
Mask strong smells.
If the medication has a strong or unpleasant scent, place it in the pill wrap first, then wash your hands before giving it to your dog. This helps prevent transferring the smell to the outside of the treat—something sensitive noses notice immediately.
Follow with a bonus treat.
Right after the meds, give another treat—almost rapid-fire style. This reinforces the experience and leaves your dog focused on the reward, not the pill.
For the gulpers.
If your dog tends to swallow treats whole, you can wrap multiple medications into one small package to make things quicker and easier.
